WELCOME to the official website of the Mid Shropshire Crown Green Bowling League for what everyone connected with sport sincerely hopes will be some kind of 2020 season - our 88th since being established way back in 1932.

Thursday 2nd April should have been the start date for the campaign with the first scheduled fixtures in the Dennis Lewis Thursday Division. But the Covid 19 pandemic has put paid to that with the sport suspended for the foreseeable future by the sport’s governing body, the BCGBA

Instead, the health and safety of all bowlers is the top priority. Strict Government rules on social distancing and staying at home are the key tools in trying to achieve this, aimed at slowing down the spread of the virus and giving the NHS a chance to cope.

Member clubs are urged to make sure their premises and equipment are secure and are reassured that essential maintenance of greens, ie regular cutting of the grass, is permitted as it is outdoors and those carrying out the work can stay isolated.

Who knows what the rest of the year holds, but the League’s officers are working on contingency plans in the hope that we will get the green light to play again in the second half of the season, They are also looking at possible help packages for clubs who struggle as they are starved of income.

If we do get to bowl in 2020, Mike Beckett's revolutionary results system means that this much-praised site – launched in 2011 – provides everything you need to know about the League . . . and all in one place.

Based in Telford, the League now has 26 member clubs - after the sad withdrawal of Stockton at January’s AGM - with well over 1,400 bowlers competing in three main 12-a-side divisions on Friday nights and three 10-a-side Monday divisions.

There is also a popular Thursday night division, which is eight-a-side, and a Saturday afternoon division with matches of four singles and two doubles. Both of these divisions have a unique points scoring system which rewards individual bowlers.

Boasting a geographic spread from Albrighton in the east, to Highey in the south, Shawbury-based Elephant & Castle up north and Prince of Wales Hotel in Shrewsbury, the League is proud of its efforts to give clubs the tools to try and attract more members, especially younger ones, recently securing a £7,145 grant from Sport England to provide modern coaching equipment.

The Junior Development Policy put into practice at Hadley Learning Community and Charlton BC has now run for four years, while junior coaching programmes at Shifnal and Sinclair have set the example for others to follow. And the reward? It was winning the Shropshire junior inter-league championship after fielding 3 of the 7 teams that took part.

Before the health crisis got really serious, the League continued to award Life Memberships at the 2020 AGM to recognise the efforts of bowlers to further the sport. Honoured at this year's AGM were (PICTURED from left) hugely popular referee and Much Wenlock stalwart Bob Mumford, the rock of women’s bowling in Shropshire and the first female Life Member Mabel Finnigan, and the finest administrator in Shropshire bowls history, former League fixture secretary Ian Gaut
