Senior Inter-League A Success

posted Jun 10, 2013, 4:29 AM by Malcolm Fletcher
Mid Shropshire may not have won the 2013 Shropshire Senior inter-league, but everyone involved in hosting the one-day championship on Saturday, June 8, can be justifiably proud of their efforts.

Host clubs Bowring, Sir John Bayley and Hadley USC, the green managers and referee Mike Potter did a fine job in seeing the 11 hour marathon to a fitting conclusion.

For a cracking final at Hadley saw Whitchurch just pip the Shropshire Premier League to the John Bowers Trophy by two shots (151-149).

The Whitchurch boys recovered from losing to Shropshire Ladies by four chalks in their round robin group at Sir John Bayley earlier in the day.

They reached the semi-finals by virtue of being the best runners-up in the three groups – and then took full advantage of their good fortune.

Wem, winners of the crown in 2010, were Whitchurch’s victims in the semis by 12 shots while the Premier League were beating Shropshire Ladies by 14 in a tussle which saw the eight games shared. Fuller details are available on the SCGBA website.

For the record, the Mid Shropshire team lost by 15 to Shropshire Ladies in their group opener on the bottom green at the Bayley, despite a 21-13 success by Simon Davies.

They they then lost by 13 to eventual champions Whitchurch, homester Kristian Lewis winning 21-7, before ending the group on a high with a 50 shot romp against Market Drayton Senior Citizens in which Allan Gaut won 21-7.

AND FINALLY, don’t forget Senior Merit qualifying night on Wednesday, June 12 (6.30pm), and the Under-15 Merit 24 hours later at St Georges where organiser Phil King will take entries on the night.
