Mid Shropshire’s over-60s squad made a brave defence of the Shropshire veterans inter-league crown on Saturday, June 22.
They won their three-team round robin group at Baschurch, beating Tanners Shropshire by nine shots and host league Wem to make the knockout stages at Reman.
After a long wait for the other qualifiers at the Shrewsbury venue, the team – managed by Don Holding and captained by Tony Roche – swept through their semi-final.
They then faced Tanners Shropshire again, who had made the semi-finals as the best group runners-up and then beaten Ludlow in their semi.
And just like the first final of the competition in 2011 when Tanners and Mid Shropshire clashed, it was too close to call.
The scores finished tied (148-148) and Mid Shropshire had the best card thanks to past County President Tony Roche beating current County President John Hughes 21-13.
But Tanners Shropshire were deemed the new holders of the Derek Wright Shield on the most winners rules as they finished with five winners from the eight games.
Wem League chairman Barry Jennings said: “You could not see a better final, whatever the standard of bowls, than this one. There were no losers here - and all the bowlers can feel proud of their efforts.”
