Sole selector and skipper Tony Roche was a proud man as Mid Shropshire stormed to a second Shropshire veterans inter-league championship triumph in three years.
And they did it the hard way, beating the hosts Ludlow A – who had four homesters in their line-up - in the final at Craven Arms on Saturday, June 21.
Roche’s men reeled off wins in the first five of the eight-a-side climax and saved the best until last as Steve Parton bowled superbly to beat County President John Coxill 21-10 and seal a 12 shot victory.
“It was an absolutely superb team performance,” said Roche, himself a past County President.
But the day had not started too well for Mid Shropshire’s over-60s as they lost their first round robin group game on Burway No.1 by four chalks against Wem.
However, a five shot win over Tanners Shropshire meant all three teams ended up up with records of played 2, won 1 and lost 1 - Mid Shropshire and Tanners finishing joint top of the table with a plus aggregate of 1.
Confusion reigned for a while as officials tried to sort out who would be declared winners of the group and make the semi-finals.
Ludlow League secretary Steve Burmingham explained: “An executive decision was made that whoever won the game between Tanners and Mid Shropshire would qualify as group winners. Mid Shropshire won that game 150-145 so scraped through as group winners by the narrowest of margins.”
In the semis Mid Shropshire beat Market Drayton by nine shots before a glorious end to a long day that helped ease the disappointment of losing to Tanners in last year’s final at Reman in Shrewsbury on the best card rule.
