Ayden Smith and Nick Mullinder are the new names that will be going on the Dixon Driscoll Doubles trophy after they stormed to success.

The Bowring-Hadley USC combination won the League title with two devastating displays to finish off matters on the old green at Donnington Wood.
They beat battling Allscott Heath duo Phil Craggs and Chris Hayward 21-10 in Saturday (June 23) night’s final – scoring a full house four at the first end and racing 11-0 up – after beating Bob Elcock & Tony Garmson (Wrockwardine Wood) 21-9 in the semi-finals.

Smith, now settled in a new house in Newport and about to become a dad, led brilliantly all evening, despite the distraction of music from a disco in the Donnington clubhouse.
Craggs & Hawyard, relieved to get double figures in the final after such a slow start, had beat father and son John and Rob Clarke (Wrockwardine Wood) 21-18 in their semi after recovering from 15-4 down in their quarter-final.

It was at the same stage that Smith & Mullinder beat 2008 winners and recently crowned Shropshire Father & Son champions Roy and Josh Bradburn.

Thirty pairs contested qualifiers on very quick greens at Hadley USC and Maddocks earlier in the day and league president Mike Potter and competition secretary Phil King made the presentations after four hours of fine finals action.
Just for the record, Elcock and his father reached the first ever final of the competition in1965, losing to W Ball & J Huxley, but Elcock won the Senior Merit that year!

Quarter-final scores - Smith & Mullinder 21 Roy & Josh Bradurn (Bowring) 15; Elcock & Garmson 21 Stuart Clee & Josh Cotton (Wrockwardine Wood) 19; Craggs & Hayward 21 Kane Beaman & Will Plant (SJ Bayley) 16; J & R Clarke 21 John Potter & Ben Hudson (SJ Bayley) 17.
