There was simply no stopping Tony Roche retaining the League's Over-60 Merit title.

The Sir John Bayley man gave a brilliant display to beat Richard Suggett (Stockton) 21-6 in the final at Allscott Heath on Saturday 18th May.

League president Mike Potter returned the Ray & Jeff Hutchinson Trophy to Roche and summed it up by saying: “Richard could do nothing about it – he came up against a brick wall in Tony.”

Suggett, Senior Merit winner in 2014, was soon 9-1 down in the final and had no answer to Roche’s accuracy on a mark over the middle of the immaculate green.

But Roche, winner of the County Veterans Merit in 2016 when bowling for Madeley CC, had to survive a scare in the semi-finals, virtually running out from 14-8 down to beat Graham Turner of St Georges 21-15.

Suggett beat Horsehay skipper Peter Burd 21-15 at the same stage as 10 of the 13 who had entered turned up to play but, sadly for league officials, there was still no lady entry.

Competition secretary Phil King thanked hosts Allscott and greenkeeper George Groucott.

Quarter-final scores being – Turner 21 John Clarke (Wrockwardine Wood) 18; Roche 21 Peter Spragg (Sinclair) 9, Suggett 21 Steve Wall (Albrighton) 14; Burd 21 Dave Brown (Horsehay) 18.
