Doubles – one prized, one unwanted – were the name of the game as Harry Church was crowned the League’s new Under-18 Merit champion.

The Sinclair youngster won the title for second time in three years when he came out on top of a small field of eight entries on Saturday 8th July at Wellington’s Sir John Bayley Club.

But by beating Emma Massey-Jones 21-16 in the crunch game, he sentenced the Newport bowler to a second defeat in the final of this competition.

Harry, a firm fixture in the Shropshire junior team, was second in Sinclair’s first division averages on the night of his triumph, having played a key role in helping the Ketley club reach the semi-finals of the Shropshire Cup.

Shifnal twins Tom and Joe Killen were the beaten semi-finalists, Harry beating Joe 21-15 while Emma swept past Tom 21-9.

Quarter-final scores – E Davies 15 J Killen 21, C Corbett 4 Church 21, Massey-Jones 21 D Corbett 5, J Millman 7 T Killen 21.
