The messages of congratulations flowed on social media as Peter Spragg proved a popular winner of the League’s Over-60 Merit.

He became only the second bowler to get his hands on the Ray & Jeff Hutchinson Trophy after triumphing in a cracking final at Trench.

The Sinclair 63-year-old took the title with a 21-19 victory over Graham Turner (Donnington Wood) to bring the curtain down on five hours of action on Saturday 20th May.
He quickly built a 12-5 lead on a superb surface but slipped behind for the first time at 16-15 as Turner refused to lie down.

And Spragg had to battle back from 18-15 down, marking his moment of triumph with two clenched fists before receiving the trophy from league chairman Sean Round.

His father, Billy, won the Mid Shropshire Senior Merit in 1981 and now Donnington ‘ depot’ worker Peter has a league title of his own to cherish.

A watching Dave Brown, the dethroned champion after his success in the first running of the competition last year, said of Peter: "It couldn't have happened to a nicer fella."

There were 11 entries, up on 2016, and now league officials will look at ways of encouraging lady bowlers to enter, starting next year.

Spragg beat Tony Roche (Madeley CC) 21-12 in the semi-finals while Turner was winning a cracker against Bowring’s Richard Suggett 21-15.

Quarter-final results - Dave Brown (Bowring) 20 Richard Suggett 21; Peter Burd (Horsehay) 20 Graham Turner 21; Bob Elcock (Wrockwardine Wood) 5 Tony Roche 21; Peter Spragg 21 Allan Gaut (Wrockwardine Wood) 19.
