We Three Kings . . .

The words of the Christmas carol ‘We Three Kings’ came to mind as the League's competition secretary Phil King and his younger son Aaron won the Dixon Driscoll Doubles.

They delivered a never-say-die performance to pip King senior’s elder son Jamie and his partner Sally Clee 21-18 in a stunning final at Maddocks on Saturday 24th July.
Phil and Aaron son trailed Jamie and Sally, this season’s winners of Mixed Doubles, 15-5 in the key clash.
And the young Bowring-Wrockwardine Wood combination actually lay game at 17-8 in a real family affair of an encounter.

“But their opponents refused to give in and, using a mark on the clubhouse side of a lightning fast green, they eventually sealed a 21-18 victory in a classic match that finished around 10pm after a battle lasting 100 minutes,” said League general secretary Malcolm Fletcher.

League chairman Sean Round presented the trophy, the first won by King senior in his role in charge of Mid Shropshire comps.

He and Aaron (Hadley USC-Bowring) had survived two full house fours to beat the title winners of the last two years, Peter Millington and Simon Oldcorn of Trench, 21-13 in the semi-finals.

But for Jamie and Sally it was the exact opposite to the final in their last four tie, having to recover from 15-6 down with some accurate firing to beat Alan Jones (Madeley CC) and John Roberts Jnr (Newport) 21-17.

A total of 30 pairs featured in qualifiers at Allscott and St Georges in the morning, the quarter-final scores at Maddocks being:

Jones & Roberts Jnr 21 Sian Skelton & Sophie Meredith 10; Richard Suggett & Steve Bishton 8 King & Clee 21; Millington & Oldcorn 21 Roy & Josh Bradburn 13; King & King 21 Juliette King & Karen Smith 11.
