Another Crisis Funding Opportunity?

Business Support Grants - New Discretionary Fund available

The Government announced last week that a discretionary fund was being made available to Councils to provide certain small businesses,which were previously outside of the Government scheme, with a grant.

This follows a letter that Telford & Wrekin Council Leader Cllr Shaun Davies wrote to the Government recently, asking for more funding for Telford and Wrekin to support businesses who were falling outside short of the Government’s business support programmes.

We are waiting for further details to be announced this week, but the Government have indicated that the following businesses are likely to be included in the new scheme:

  • Businesses in shared offices or other flexible work spaces eg: industrial parks, science parks etc;
  • Regular market traders;
  • Small charity properties that would meet the criteria for small business rate relief;
  • Bed and Breakfast properties.

In addition to the above, the business must:

  • Have less than 50 employees;
  • Be able to demonstrate that they have seen a significant drop of income due to Coronavirus restrictions;
  • Have ongoing fixed building related costs;
  • Have been trading on or before 11 March.

We are waiting further guidance from Government before we can determine the businesses who will qualify.  As soon as the Government releases this information, we will be in touch.

Support Grants paid to Telford and Wrekin businesses to date

To date,  we have awarded over 2,200 grants with a value of almost £27m to small businesses or those in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector.

We have written to every business within the borough who we believe qualifies for a grant, as well as sending reminders and promoting the support available via social media.

In addition, almost £30m business rate relief has been awarded to nurseries, retail, hospitality and leisure businesses for 2020/21.

And the Council is committed to revisiting the almost 500 applications from businesses previously rejected because these didn’t meet Government criteria for the scheme’s initial stage.
