Past County President Tony Roche has added yet another veterans honour to his collection - the League's Over-60 Merit crown.

The Sir John Bayley bowler got his hands on the Ray & Jeff Hutchinson Trophy at the third attempt at Trench by beating John Clarke 21-18 in the final, the Wrockwardine Wood stalwart having also lost in the first ever final of this competition.
Roche, who served as President in 2004, won the Shropshire Veterans Merit and Mid Shropshire Senior Citizens League Merit in 2016 when bowling for Madeley Cricket Club.

But the MSBL Over-60 title had eluded him – until he produced a determined display to come from 17-14 down and pip Clarke on Saturday 19ths May.
“It was tough on John, but for Tony – now in his 70s - winning the title was a fitting reward has he has just stepped down as the League’s veterans inter-league captain after guiding them to the title four times in five years,” said League secretary Malcolm Fletcher.

Sadly, only seven of the 13 who had entered turned up and Roche beat Pete Burd (Horsehay) 21-11 in the semi-finals while Clarke was having a real struggle to see off Ian Evans (Sinclair) 21-19.

Quarter-final scores - Evans 21 Ian Delves (Wrockwardine Wood) 16, Bob Elcock (Wrockwardine Wood) 17 Roche 21, Burd 21 Don Hood (Sinclair) 19.
