Mid Shropshire's Easter Treat

Easter Saturday - March 31st - will see one of the best finals day line-ups in years in the climax of the £6,000 St Georges Open.

The Mid Shropshire club will shrug off weather worries and problems filling all 256 places when a galaxy of stars assembles for the 10.30am start to finals day.

The 32 qualifiers will be chasing a £1,000 first prize in the Champion of Champions qualifier –and organiser Graham Turner couldn’t be happier.

“Speaking to Duncan Reeves the bookmaker, who will be on site on finals day, he said it was probably the best line up he had seen for some time,” declared Turner.

“Lynn Pritchatt, the partner of the late, great Mel Evans MBE, will be presenting the prizes and this is a great opportunity to see the best bowlers in the country in action.

“We need support to be able to run this competition in the future and to pay bigger prizes - so come and support and have a bet on your favourite.”

Champion of Champions Michael Beer, county No.1 Callum Wraight, British Parks Senior Merit winner Martin Lloyd and Newport’s former Dragon Peter Farmer spearhead the home challenge.

The greats of the game are represented by Graeme Wilson, Chris Brown, Matt Gilmore, Darren Plenderleith, Simon Coupe and Tommy Johnstone, but the field is also awash with local Premier League bowlers.

There’s Paul Evans and Scott Simpson of Sir John Bayley, Newport’s Sam Millward and Dan Taylor of Wrockwardine Wood.

And those having a bet might just fancy some money on former St Georges big gun Craig Baker and returning Shropshire star James Grimston, who both know how to win open titles.
