Belated, but sincere, congratulations go to David Lloyd who is the League's new Under-25 Merit champion.

The Newport bowler came out on top of 14 entries at Bowring by beating Jodie Rutter of Wrockwardine Wood in the final to celebrate his return to the Shropshire senior team.

Lloyd returned to Bowring, where he had helped the county beat North Lancs & Fylde earlier this month, to take the title on Saturday 15th June.

Former Bowring bowler Lloyd, who won the league’s Under-18 Merit in 2012, beat Jodie 21-13 in the final on the Wellington club's older green at the end of the fifth running of the competition.

League President Mike Potter said the crucial moment of the showdown came with Lloyd leading 17-13, his summary of the final being:

"As the last rays of light ebbed away, the final began strongly for David to open a good lead of 10-1 before Jodie fought to reduce the deficit to trail 9-13 after 16 ends - only for David to push on into the corners to lead 17-11.

"After a double score by Jodie, she had two bowls within a foot that would have seen the scores go to 17-15. But possibly the defining moment of the final was seen by the 30 plus spectators as David’s second bowl grazed past Jodie’s and nudged the jack back to give him a valued two.

"David then followed that with two near perfect bowls that proved to be good enough to see him become the new champion, winning 21-13 in 24ends."

Lloyd beat last year’s winner and clubmate Sam Millward 21-12 in the quarter-finals and the semi-final scores were – Lloyd 21 Jamie King 16, Rutter 21 Harry Church 15.
Other bowlers beaten in the last eight were Sally Clee, Josh Cotton and Lucy Hireson.

Also congratulations to Graham Turner of St Georges who won the County Veterans Merit title at Bayston Hill.
