Newport is the place to be for Mid Shropshire bowls lovers this weekend - starting tonight, Saturday 16 July, from 6.30pm.

That's when the No.1 (non Premier green) hosts the second County Cup semi-final between Hadley USC and Bowring, the winners to face holders Castlefields in the final on August 13.

And tomorrow (Sunday) Newport is back in the spotlight as the venue for the home leg of Shropshire Ladies' county championship match with North Lancs & Fylde (2pm), a place in next month's semi-finals already secured after three straight wins.

Meanwhile, second division promotion chasers Highley are licking their wounds after suffering an agonising one chalk defeat in their Shropshire Cup semi-final.

The Miners led Tanners Shropshire League division one side Prince of Wales Hotel by 24 after eight on the bottom green at St Georges, but a 21-6 card from the newly crowned British Ladies Merit champion Tracy Ryan helped swing the tie in the Shrewsbury club's favour.
