Merit Magic = Super Saturday!

posted Jun 30, 2016, 11:53 AM by Malcolm Fletcher
Saturday 2 July is the tops on the League's calendar - it's finals day in  the Senior Merit.

All roads lead to Maddocks for a 2pm start with a top class field that features three past winners, a father and son and the recently deposed County Merit champion.

Paul Beer, Craig Owen and Les Mumford are the past winners in the line-up but Mumford - who also lost in last year’s final - and Beer have had the misfortune to be drawn against each other in the first round.

Wrockwardine Wood father and son, John and Rob Clarke, qualified for the last 16 from a modern record of 64 entries this season and Senior Merit finals regular Phil Craggs and last year's finalists Pat Minton, John Potter and Jason Wilson are all back again.

But it is surely 2015 County Merit champion, Rob Roden of Bowring, eligible to play in the competition due to a rule change allowing Thursday and Saturday division regulars to enter, who will be a hot favourite to lift the trophy.

The full first round draw is:

Rob Roden (Bowring) v
John Potter (Hadley USC)
Kieran Buckley (Donnington Wd) v
John Clarke (Wrock Wd)
Les Mumford (Madeley CC) v
Paul Beer (St Georges)
Josh Cotton (Wrock Wood) v
Jonathan Waland (Allscott)
Paul Bradburne (Wrock Wood) v
Jason Wilson (St Georges)
Chris Lodge (Madeley CC) v
Rob Clarke (Wrock Wood)
Phil Craggs (Allscott) v
Simon Hall (Sinclair)
Pat Minton (SJ Bayley) v
Craig Owen (Broseley)
