Under-25 Merit

2015 -
This new competition, sponsored by Bowls Trader, was entered by 24 bowlers on Saturday, 20 June, 2015, at St Georges from 6pm.

It’s already been a big year for Tom Roden – and it’s just got bigger.

He won the inaugural Mid Shropshire Under-25 Merit with a fine late burst to end a frustrating run of near-misses.

The captain of Sir John Bayley’s Premier team, who got married in April before returning to the county senior team, ran out from 18-13 down against Sam Millward of Newport in the final on the big green at St Georges.

“I finally stopped dipping out in finals – I’m relieved,” said the first champion of the Bowls Trader-sponsored singles.

Roden, who will be too old for the competition next year, played marvellously on a long distance mark on an edge of the green to break the heart of the Millward in a climax that finished after 11pm.

The late show was due to the new event attracting 24 entries, forcing organiser Phil King to use both greens early in the night.

And it was Millward who looked a good bet to win the title after he destroyed his Newport clubmate Jamie King 21-4 in the semi-finals while Roden was eventually ending the hopes of Bowring’s David Lloyd 21-14.

King, who hopes to attract 32 entries next year, congratulated Roden, commiserated with Millward and thanked hosts St Georges and referee Terry Whitehouse before the presentation of the trophy.

Quarter-final results: Lloyd 21 Kieran Buckley (Donnington Wood) 17, Roden 21 Aaron King (Bowring) 17, Millward 21 Andy Johnson (SJ Bayley) 12, Lee Taylor (Allscott) 9 Jamie King 21.

Division 3 – Extra Competition for 2013 . . . an 8-a-side knockout to be played at neutral venues.

Top six as of September league meeting in one competition and bottom six in the other. First round (with two byes in each comp) on Friday, September 20, semi-finals on Friday, September 27.

Draw made at September meeting and will be straight through, ie not re-drawn after each round. Clubs to notify Malcolm Fletcher of results by text, phone call or email within 48 hours of tie being played.

Finals to be played, probably on the two greens at the Bowring, on Tuesday, October 1 (7pm start) – with buffet for players afterwards (possibly at the Bayley Club at 9.30pm - where the monthly meeting will have been held). NB: If Bowring C make the top six final it would be played on the Bowring green that they DON’T use for fixtures.

Players selected for all ties in this extra competition must have played in a third division game this season.

Winners decided on aggregate. If that is tied, the most winners rule applies – and if that is level, the team with the best winning card will go through. If that is the same, captains will nominate one player to play an 11-up play-off game to decide the winners. Toss of a coin for the jack in all individual games.

No match fees, but clubs requested to each pay £3 for green use at neutral venues. Token prizes to be decided before the annual presentation evening.
