Mixed Doubles

Run as a one-dayer on Saturday 11 April, 10am start on Donnington Wood No.1

What we have, we hold – that was defiant salvo from Rob Fuller and Sally Clee as they won the league’s mixed doubles crown for the second year running.

The Wrockwardine Wood duo emerged triumphant from 16 pairs at Donnington Wood, beating Trench husband and wife Peter and Carleen Millington in the final.

But the key game did not start well for the young Wrockites as they conceded a full house four at the first end and trailed 14-9 on the No. 1 green in the sunny but cool conditions.

The reigning champions, having won the title at Allscott last year, then produced the winning burst to get 20-16 ahead before eventually securing a 21-18 success after 20 ends.

Fuller & Clee beat Bowring father and daughter combo Rich and Susie Lawson 21-16 in the semi-finals while the Doodys were defeating league vice-chairman Steve Roberts and Sian Skelton of Wrockwardine Wood to 15.

 Quarter-final scores: Phil & Marg King (HUSC-Bowring) 14 Fuller & Clee 21; R & S Lawson 21 Allan & Angela Gaut (W Wd) 14; Roberts & Skelton 21 Aaron King & Julie King (Bowring-Sinclair) 14; P & C Doody 21 Sophie Meredith & Ray Gregory (W Wd-St Georges) 18.

Rob Fuller and Sally Clee made it two titles for the season when they won the Mid Shropshire Mixed Doubles on Sunday 24 August at Allscott (10am start) when there were 12 entries.

The Wrockwardine Wood duo, having won the Cy Lewis Mixed Doubles crown, triumphed again when they beat Sir John Bayley brother and sister, Craig and Kelly Baugh, 21-11 in the final.

Thirteen pairs contested the title, the semi-final scores being: Fuller & Clee 21 Stuart Church & Elsie Pugh (Sinclair) 14; C & K Baugh 21 Phil King (Hadley USC) & Marg King (Bowring) 12.

Husband and wife Tony and Mandy Rhodes made up for losing in the final last year by winning the Mid Shropshire Mixed Doubles crown.

The St Georges couple added to their Telford Mixed Doubles triumph at Wrockwardine Wood earlier in the month by coming out on top of a satisfying 24 entries for the league competition on Sunday, August 25, at Allscott.

And, in a strange twist of fate, their 21-15 victims in the final were Bowring twins Dave and Beth Lloyd – the children of Val Lloyd who, with Simon Davies, the Rhodes’s beat to land the Telford Mixed title!

Tony and Mandy, runners-up to his brother Simon and Pauline Wilson in the Mid Shropshire Mixed last year and the County Husband & Wife comps earlier this season, flew past Jamie King and Chelsea Gregory 21-10 in their semi-final, having ousted big guns Allan and Angela Gaut in the last eight.

The Lloyd twins, coming to the end of their last year in the under-18 junior ranks, were even more impressive in their semi-final as they swept aside Dave and Juliette King 21-9.

Quarter-final results – King & Gregory 21 Josh & Ellie Wall 15; A & A Gaut, T & M Rhodes 21; D & J King 21 Alison Cotton & Paul Beer 13; D & B Lloyd 21 Luke Walmsley & Joan Edwards 11.
The competition was played all on one day - Saturday, June 16 - on Donnington Wood No 2 with Phil King taking 22 entries, the most he has had for this one-dayer since taking over as competitions chief.
And the new champions are Simon Rhodes (St Georges) and Pauline Wilson (Bridgnorth) who won a family-affair of a final. They beat Simon's brother Tony Rhodes and his wife Mandy (St Georges) 21-18 in the final.
In the semi-finals Rhodes & Wilson beat Shirley Jones & John Clarke (Wrockwardine Wood) 21-18 while the Rhodes's were ending the hopes of another husband and wife, Dave and Juliett King (St Georges-Sinclair), 21-11.
Wrockwardine Wood husband and wife, Phil and Helen Clee, added to their astonishing record in this competition when the 2011 version played on Saturday, May 28, at the Sir John Bayley Club.
They won the trophy for the sixth time in 14 years when they defeated Sonya Lucas and Tom Langford 21-17 in the final, running out from 17-15 down in blustery conditions.
Phil & Helen saw off Dave & Juliette King 21-3 in their semi-final while Lucas & Langford won an all-Dragons battle 21-11 against Alison Cotton & Paul Beer.
