Already Thinking Ahead - To 2021

The driving force of a local league that features a number of Mid Shropshire clubs is already worried about how the C-19 pandemic might impact next year’s programme.

Mark Bennett, the chairman and fixture co-ordinator of the Highley League, has called on all its 22 member teams to start giving thought to the 2021 campaign.

“Unfortunately, Mark believes that there's no chance of any league bowls, competitions or knockouts being played this season,” said a Highley League spokesperson.

“He is also concerned that some sort of social distancing may continue into next season and restrict the number of players allowed on the green at the same time.

“With this in mind, he'd welcome opinions from bowlers whether a reduction in the size of teams from 10-a-side to eight or possibly nine would be more acceptable.”

The league’s usual 10-a-side matches are played on Tuesday nights and feature clubs such as Bylet, Highley, Horsehay, Bridgnorth, Broseley, Madeley CC, Much Wenlock, Chelmarsh, Worfield and Albrighton.

Mark is a stalwart member of Stockton, who sadly had to resign from the Mid Shropshire League prior to the scheduled start of the 2020 campaign due to a lack of bowlers.
